Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Somewhere in La Grange, there's a building that has outlasted just about everything around it, and the story starts back in 1852. That's when this place went up as the J.

C. Stiehl family home. Now, whoever built it knew exactly what they were doing, because they built it the old German way, what the marker calls fachwerk.

Handmade brick. Hand-hewn cedar timbers. And holding it all together, not a single nail you'd recognize today, just wooden pegs driven in with purpose and patience.

This was a structure meant to stand. And stand it did. Decades rolled by.

The Stiehl family home passed out of family hands in 1912, sold to something called the Etairio Club. Now that name alone deserves a moment of quiet respect. The Etairio Club held onto the building for over two decades, and then, in 1938, they gave it to the city of La Grange outright.

A gift. The city took it in, and eventually it became the City Library Building, a place for books inside walls built from handmade brick and cedar cut by hand more than a century before. But buildings, even stubborn ones, need tending.

So between 1967 and 1969, this old fachwerk survivor went through a restoration. Those wooden pegs, still doing their job after well over a hundred years. The handmade brick, still holding the line.

Some things, if you build them right from the start, just refuse to let go.
