Duane's take

Here's what the marker outside this building has to say, and I'm gonna give it to you the Duane way. Now, when you look at a building that's been standin' since 1880, you start wonderin' what kind of mind drew it up. The answer, in this case, is F.E.

Ruffini, an architect who left his mark on numerous public buildings across Texas in the late nineteenth century. And this particular mark, right here in Collin County, is one of the very few of his structures still remaining in the state. That alone ought to make you slow the car down.

Ruffini designed this place in the High Victorian Italianate style, which sounds like something you'd find in a European painting, and honestly, lookin' at those arched windows and that bracketed cornice, you'd half believe it. Those aren't the details of a man building a box to lock people in. Those are the details of a craftsman who took his work seriously, even when the work was a prison.

Completed in 1880, this building took on its role as the Collin County prison and held it, held it, for ninety-nine years. Ninety-nine. One year shy of a century of service.

Now, nothing stays exactly the same for ninety-nine years, and this building was no exception. In 1938, with funds from the federal Public Works Administration, it was modified. The bones Ruffini drew up were still there, but time and necessity had their say.

What you're looking at today is a layered thing: the vision of a nineteenth-century architect and the practical hand of the Depression era, all wrapped up in those arched windows and that bracketed cornice that's been watching Collin County change for well over a hundred years. Most of Ruffini's work is gone now. This one isn't.

What the marker says

Designed by F.E. Ruffini, architect of numerous public buildings in Texas in the late 19th century, this High Victorian Italianate structure served as the Collin County prison for 99 years. Completed in 1880, it was modified in 1938 with funds from the federal Public Works Administration. Prominent features of the building include its bracketed cornice and arched windows.
