Collin County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how I'm passin' it along to you. Now, some stories fill up pages. Some stories fill up books.

And then there are stories that say everything they need to say in just a few words, and dare you to sit with the weight of them. The Collinsworth Cemetery up here in Collin County is one of those. Established in 1895.

That's the whole of it, and that's no small thing. Somebody chose this ground. Somebody said, this is where we mark the ones we've lost, and this is where we'll keep coming back.

Whatever the world looked like in 1895, whatever was being built and planted and argued over in Collin County, there were also people being laid to rest right here. And that has continued. The State of Texas recognized it as a Historic Texas Cemetery in 2002, which is just the official way of saying what the folks who've tended this ground always already knew.

Some places earn their standing simply by enduring. The Collinsworth Cemetery has done exactly that.
