Duane's take
Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about the Dean and Gladys Porter House in Cameron County. Now settle in, because this is one of those stories where a house is really just the opening line. Built in 1940, right there in Brownsville, this place went up for Gladys Sams Porter, born in 1910, and her husband Dean Robertson Porter, born in 1903.
The man behind the design was R. Newell Waters, out of Weslaco, and the firm of Archer and Holding handled the construction. Now when you lay eyes on it, you understand why people slow down.
That centered two-story portico, framing a recessed two-story entrance bay, in a style similar to Los Angeles architecture of the time. Brownsville, Texas, with a little bit of California standing right at the front door. The house announced something.
And what it announced was the Porters. Dean Robertson Porter became a leader in agriculture and finance, servin' on several boards of directors, and at some point the people of Brownsville decided he ought to be running the whole city, because he became mayor. Gladys was not standing in any shadow.
She logged a lifetime of volunteer work, and she served as president of the Earl C. Sams Foundation. Together, these two were philanthropists and community-minded business leaders in every sense of those words.
And here is how you know a life landed: a zoo, a high school, and a park all bear the Porter name to this day. Dean passed in 1969. Gladys in 1980.
The house they built together in 1940 is still standing, still turning heads, still telling the story. Some houses are just houses. This one is a whole chapter.
What the marker says
BUILT IN 1940 FOR GLADYS (SAMS) PORTER (1910-1980) AND HER HUSBAND, DEAN ROBERTSON PORTER (1903-1969), THIS HOUSE WAS DESIGNED BY R. NEWELL WATERS OF WESLACO AND CONSTRUCTED BY ARCHER AND HOLDING. IT FEATURES A CENTERED TWO-STORY PORTICO FRAMING A RECESSED, TWO-STORY ENTRANCE BAY IN A STYLE SIMILAR TO LOS ANGELES ARCHITECTURE OF THE TIME. THE PORTERS WERE PHILANTHROPISTS AND COMMUNITY-MINDED BUSINESS LEADERS OF BROWNSVILLE. IN ADDITION TO A LIFETIME OF VOLUNTEER WORK, GLADYS SERVED AS PRESIDENT OF THE EARL C. SAMS FOUNDATION. DEAN BECAME A LEADER IN AGRICULTURE AND FINANCE BY SERVING ON SEVERAL BOARDS OF DIRECTORS AND WAS MAYOR OF BROWNSVILLE. THE PORTERS ARE BEST ASSOCIATED WITH THE ZOO, HIGH SCHOOL, AND PARK NAMED IN THEIR HONOR.
