Hidalgo County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how I'm gonna tell it to you. Somewhere in Hidalgo County, in the town of Donna, there stands a school building that has outlasted just about everything else the district ever put up. That is not an accident.

That is what happens when a community decides to build something that means something. Back in 1925, the people of Donna went to the polls for a special bond election, and they voted to build. What rose up out of that decision was what would become the oldest existing structure in the entire Donna Independent School District.

Think about that for a moment — every building the district has ever put up, and this one is still standing when the rest have come and gone. The firm behind it was Elwing and Mulhausen, and those architects did not come to play. They gave Donna a two-story central block anchored by two large square towers, and right there at the entrance, a Tudor-arched entry — the kind of detail that says we are not just building a school, we are building a landmark.

It started its life as an elementary school, doing exactly what the bond election intended. Then in 1965, its role shifted — it became a junior high facility, and it held that position all the way through 1983. Nearly six decades of children walking under that Tudor arch, looking up at those towers, learning whatever it is a building like that quietly teaches you about permanence.

The marker calls it a highly significant part of Donna's built environment, and standing there in front of those towers, it is hard to argue. Some things get built to last, and some things just do. This one did both.

What the marker says

Built as the result of a special bond election in 1925, this is the oldest existing structure in the Donna Independent School District. Initially an elementary school, it served as a junior high facility from 1965 to 1983. Designed by the architectural firm of Elwing & Mulhausen, it is a highly significant part of Donna's built environment. The school building features a two-story central block with a Tudor-arched entry and two large square towers. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1990
