Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. El Camino Real. The King's Highway.

Even the name carries weight, doesn't it. Say it out loud and you can almost hear the creak of an ox-cart wheel somewhere far behind you in the dust. This road right here, where you're standing or rolling past, was once the regal highway connecting his Catholic majesty's far-flung kingdoms.

We're talking about a route that stretched from Mexico City all the way to the Kingdom of New Mexico, a thread of trail stitching together the whole grand ambition of New Spain. And it passed right here. From 1581 onward, this was the route.

Now think about that year for a moment. Fifteen eighty-one. Long before this land was Texas, long before most of the world had any idea what lay out here in this enormous stretch of earth and sky, people were already moving along this road.

Conquerors came through. Padres came through, carrying their faith and their hardships. Merchants followed the scent of trade.

Adventurers, the kind who couldn't sit still if you nailed them down, came through too. And settlers, ordinary people with everything they owned loaded onto whatever would carry it, they came through as well. Ox-cart and mule-train, the slow and steady traffic of a new realm finding its shape one mile at a time.

The State of Texas saw fit to mark that story in 1936, and the road beneath your wheels is still telling it.

What the marker says

The regal highway extending between his Catholic majesty's far-flung kingdoms of New Spain, from Mexico City to the Kingdom of New Mexico, passed here. From 1581 onward it was the route followed by conqueror, padre, merchant, adventurer and settler. Along its course passed ox-cart and mule-train and the traffic of the new realm.
