Duane's take
Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about this place, straight as I can give it to you. Now, out here in Jim Hogg County, the land has a long memory. And one of the quietest keepers of that memory is the El Colorado Ranch Cemetery.
Established in 1894. That's the whole of what we know from the record, and sometimes, friend, that's enough. A cemetery founded on a ranch, in a county where the brush runs deep and the sun runs hot, back when 1894 was still fresh and the twentieth century hadn't yet come knocking.
Somebody decided, in that year, that this ground would hold what mattered most. And it has been holding ever since. In 2017, the State of Texas recognized the El Colorado Ranch Cemetery as a Historic Texas Cemetery.
A formal acknowledgment that some places earn their standing simply by enduring, by keeping faith with the ones laid to rest within them, year after quiet year. That's El Colorado Ranch Cemetery. Established 1894.
Still here. Still remembered.
