Duane's take
Here's my take on what the official marker has to say about Fairfield Gates Apartments, out in Tarrant County. Now, some buildings just sit there. Others carry a whole story inside their walls, and this one's got layers.
It starts with a man named A. C. Clayton Luther, who had a vision for the land west of Fort Worth.
Big land, open parcels, and Luther saw possibility where others maybe saw scrub. In 1942, he got to building, and what came up was Ridglea Village Shopping Center. That was just the opening chapter.
Luther, along with J.T. Luther and Earl Wilson, formed a company called Luther Brothers and Wilson Company. And that partnership had ambition.
The Luther Brothers, Wilson, and the Hank Green Group joined forces and built the Western Hills Hotel and a Country Club. Not a bad run for a group of men with land and drive. But here's the part that really catches the light.
In the 1950s, Fairfield Gates Apartments was created, and it wasn't created for the public, not at first. It was built as a private family residence, specifically for J.T. Luther and Earl Wilson.
The man they brought in to design it was Architect Al Komatsu, and Komatsu did not phone it in. He drew up something modern, something that pulled in Mediterranean and Spanish Revival style elements, and the details are the kind that make you stop walking and just look. Clay tile hipped roof overhead.
Heavy timber balconies reaching out. Tile and stone courtyards and patios spread around like rooms without ceilings. A private world, designed with intention, built for people who knew exactly what they wanted.
That's Fairfield Gates. Started with a land purchase, grew through partnership, and landed as something that feels, even now, like it was meant to last.
