Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'm gonna pass it right along to you. Way back in the late 1800s, something small and quiet was taking root on the west side of Cleburne. A group of folks had been gathering for prayer at Cleburne's First Baptist Church, and out of those prayer groups grew something they called the West Side Mission, a Bible study group that had its own modest ambitions and its own sense of purpose.
Now, a mission like that needs a home, and in the early 1900s they found one, a lot on West Willingham Street where they set up their building and got to work. But the West Side Mission wasn't done yet. Not by a long shot.
In 1911, they bought a corner lot, the corner of Field and Wardville, with an eye toward building something real there one day. And that same year, during a revival meeting, the mission was organized into Field Street Baptist Church. Think about that for a second.
A revival meeting is exactly the right setting for a congregation to find its name and its footing all at once. The church held on to that vision through the years, and in 1927 they raised a brick building on that corner lot they'd been holding onto. From there the story becomes one of steady, patient growth.
Additional property purchased, renovations completed, one faithful step after another. Through all of it, the church kept its eyes on something the marker says plain as day: meeting the spiritual needs of Johnson County, through ministry to children, to youth, to adults, and through support of mission work. What started as a small circle of people bowing their heads together in prayer grew into something that's still standing on that corner.
That's not a bad outcome for a Bible study group.
What the marker says
IN THE LATE 1800s, A BIBLE STUDY GROUP KNOWN AS THE WEST SIDE MISSION GREW OUT OF PRAYER GROUPS AT CLEBURNE'S FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH. ITS BUILDING WAS LOCATED ON A LOT AT WEST WILLINGHAM STREET BOUGHT IN THE EARLY 1900s. IN 1911, THE MISSION BOUGHT A LOT ON THE CORNER OF FIELD AND WARDVILLE ON WHICH TO BUILD ONE DAY AND WAS ORGANIZED INTO FIELD STREET BAPTIST CHURCH DURING A REVIVAL MEETING. A BRICK BUILDING WAS CONSTRUCTED IN 1927. OVER THE YEARS, ADDITIONAL PROPERTY HAS BEEN PURCHASED AND RENOVATIONS COMPLETED. THE CHURCH'S MINISTRY TO CHILDREN, YOUTH, ADULTS, AND SUPPORT OF MISSION WORK DEMONSTRATE ITS MEMBERS" CONTINUING VISION OF MEETING THE SPIRITUAL NEEDS OF JOHNSON COUNTY.
