Duane's take

Now, I'm pulling this straight from the official Texas Historical Commission marker for the First Baptist Church of Dayton, so here's how the story goes. Ten people. That's where it all starts.

Ten worshipers gathering together in 1878, right there in Dayton, deciding that was enough to begin a church. No grand sanctuary, no steeple catching the morning light. Just a one-room schoolhouse on what is now East Cook Street, and a shared conviction that it would do just fine for worship services.

And it did, for nearly two decades. You have to admire that kind of determination showing up week after week in a schoolhouse. Leading the way was the Rev.

E. M. Forman, the church's first pastor, and the man was a circuit riding minister, which means he wasn't staying in one spot.

He was out on the road, carrying the word across the country. Other traveling clergymen followed him into that pulpit over the early years. D.

W. Jackson came through. So did J.

McArthur Black, J. A. Lee, J.

F. McLeod, and J. M.

Day. A parade of men passing through a little room on Cook Street, keeping that small congregation going. Then, in 1895, things shifted.

The Baptist congregation moved their services to a Union Church, set up on the southeast corner of Waring and North Main streets. A proper address. A shared space.

Things were looking steadier. And then came 1900. The hurricane of 1900 damaged the Union Church, and that congregation was not going to sit still for it.

In 1901, construction began on a Baptist sanctuary near this very site on South Church Street. They were planting roots this time, deep ones. The story doesn't stop with a building, though.

That congregation kept reaching outward. A Ladies Aid Society was organized in 1911. The first of many local missions was established in 1912.

A youth ministry began that same year, 1912. Home missions, foreign missions. They kept going.

Ten people in a schoolhouse back in 1878, and they built something that just kept growing.

What the marker says

The first Baptist congregation in Dayton was formed in 1878, when ten worshipers gathered together to begin a church. A one-room schoolhouse, located on what is now East Cook Street, was used for worship services until 1895. The church's first pastor was the Rev. E. M. Forman, a circuit riding minister. Other traveling clergymen also pastored the small church in its early years, including D. W. Jackson, J. McArthur Black, J. A. Lee, J. F. McLeod, and J. M. Day. In 1895 the Baptist congregation began conducting services in a Union Church on the southeast corner of Waring and North Main streets. In 1901, following damage to the Union Church in the hurricane of 1900, construction began on a baptist sanctuary near this site on South Church Street. Throughout its history the First Baptist congregation has sought to serve its community. A Ladies Aid Society was organized in 1911, and the first of many local missions was established in 1912. A youth ministry also began in 1912. The church congregation has maintained an active involvement in both home and foreign missionary projects.
