Gillespie County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Way out in Gillespie County, in the little community of Harper, there's a church that's been standing watch over the neighborhood for over a hundred years. Nine members.

That's all it took. Nine people got together in 1887, said we're doing this, and the First Baptist Church of Harper was born. Now, they didn't have a building yet, so they made do the way folks out here always have.

They gathered in the local school building, and when the weather allowed, under a brush arbor. You know the kind. Branches overhead, Texas sky peeking through, and a congregation that meant business.

They kept at it, those nine and whoever joined them along the way, and by 1897 they had themselves a real wooden sanctuary and a parsonage to go with it. Something you could point to and say, that's ours. The congregation stayed busy over the years, involved in community life and mission work, the kind of quiet steady labor that doesn't always make headlines but holds a place together.

And when Harper High School found itself in a pinch, in 1921 and again in 1941 and 1942, it was the church building that opened its doors and held classes. A sanctuary doubling as a schoolhouse. That's a community doing what communities are supposed to do.

Then came 1944, and the congregation raised something built to last. Native stone. A proper sanctuary and Sunday School rooms, the kind of structure that tells you these people aren't going anywhere.

They added a fellowship hall annex in 1971, a little more room to gather, a little more space for whatever comes next. More than a hundred years of Harper history, all of it rooted in nine people who showed up with nothing but intention and found that was plenty enough to start.
