Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'm gonna give it to you straight. There's a man named W. C.
Beckham, born in South Carolina in 1825, and by the time our story finds him, he's already done some traveling. Florida first, and then, sometime in the 1880s, he pointed himself toward Graham, Texas. Now, Graham was a young town with a square at its heart, and Beckham saw opportunity on the north side of that square.
He opened a mercantile store. Sold goods, moved product, kept the shelves stocked. But here's where a man's instincts take over.
His customers needed a little help sometimes, money-wise, and Beckham started making short-term loans. Just a quiet sideline at first. Just a neighborly arrangement.
That practice, the marker tells us, led to something bigger. In 1890, the Beckham National Bank was created. A full-on bank, bearing his name, rooted right there on the north side of the square where it all began.
Beckham himself passed in 1895, but the institution he built kept right on going. Then came 1921, and the bank got a new name: First National Bank in Graham. Decades rolled by.
The bank stayed put on the north side of the square, doing what banks do, threading itself through the economic life of the city, year after year, all the way to 1972. That's when it finally moved. Moved right here, to this location, where you're standing now.
South Carolina to Florida to Graham, a mercantile store to a loan arrangement to a national bank. Some things have a way of growing into exactly what they were always meant to be.
What the marker says
South Carolina native W. C. Beckham (1825-1895) came to Graham from Florida in the 1880s. He opened a mercantile store on the north side of the town square and soon began making short-term loans to his customers. That practice led to the creation of the Beckham National Bank in 1890. In 1921 it was renamed First National Bank in Graham. A significant part of the city's economic history, the bank continued in operation of the north side of the square until 1972, when it moved to this location.
