Duane's take

The way I tell it, I'm drawing straight from the official marker for the First Presbyterian Church of Karnes City. Now settle in, because even a story that sounds simple has a foundation worth knowing about. It starts, as so many Texas stories do, with a small gathering of faithful people and a whole lot of open prairie.

Back in 1894, what would become this congregation wasn't a church at all. It was a mission, just a mission, operating under the care of the Helena Presbyterians. Fourteen members, a borrowed connection to another congregation, and the kind of quiet determination that builds things slowly and builds them to last.

Then came 1895, and with it The Reverend H. R. Laird, evangelist of the Western Texas Presbytery.

He organized that mission into a proper church, fourteen members standing together, and that was the beginning of something permanent. Now, the building itself, that took a little longer. These things always do.

It wasn't until June of 1901 that the church building was completed. When it was, Karnes City had something it had never had before: its first edifice built for Protestant worship. First one.

That is not a small distinction in a young Texas town. And here is where the story lands with a quiet kind of grace. In 1970, the congregation gathered again, not to lay a cornerstone or cut a ribbon, but to celebrate seventy-five years since that organizing moment in 1895.

Some stories end with a tragedy. Some end with a bang. This one ends with a congregation still standing, still gathered, still counting the years.

That'll do just fine.
