Karnes County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Way out in Karnes County, there's a place called Harmony, and the story of its Baptist church goes back, way back, to 1864. That's according to oral tradition, mind you.

No ledger stamped with that date, no deed filed at the courthouse. Just the memory of a community, passed down like a good recipe, generation to generation. And there's something to be said for that kind of keeping.

By 1875, the congregation had itself an actual building. Thomas Ragsdale donated the land right at this site, and they raised that church up on it. Now, a building like that in a place like this didn't just sit idle on Sunday afternoons.

It pulled double duty, triple duty. School classes were held inside those walls. The Woodmen of the World Lodge met there too.

One building, a whole community's worth of living crammed inside it. Not far from the church sits the cemetery, and it holds some of the earliest settlers of Harmony and Karnes County. The oldest marked grave belongs to Martha Rabb, and it dates to 1875, the same year Ragsdale put that land in the church's name.

Think on that for a moment. The same year the deed was signed, somebody was already being laid to rest in the ground beside it. Communities don't just spring up, they settle in, and part of settlin' in is markin' where your people lie.

The Harmony Baptist Church kept on for a long time after that. Kept on through changes that would've scattered lesser congregations. But in 1974, the church disbanded.

The building went quiet. The meetings stopped. You might think that's where the story ends, and in a lot of places, it would be.

But here's the thing about Harmony. Descendants of those early members, they still come back. Every year, they gather at this site.

The church may have disbanded, but the community it made, that hasn't gone anywhere. Some things, it turns out, outlast their buildings.

What the marker says

According to oral tradition, the Harmony Baptist Church began in 1864. A church building was constructed by 1875, when Thomas Ragsdale donated land at this site to the church. The building was used also for school classes and Woodmen of the World Lodge meetings. The nearby cemetery is the burial site of some early settlers of Harmony and Karnes County. The oldest marked grave, that of Martha Rabb, dates to 1875. Although the Harmony Baptist Church disbanded in 1974, descendants of early members continue to meet here annually.
