Bosque County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll pass it along just the same. Now, Morgan, Texas, Bosque County. Some stories start with a congregation and nowhere to go.

This one does. The year was 1889, and the Morgan Methodist Church organized itself into existence, which is the easy part. The hard part was finding a place to worship.

So they did what neighbors do, they borrowed. The Baptist church building opened its doors, and the Methodists held their services right there inside it. That arrangement had a certain charm to it, you have to admit.

Two traditions, one roof. But a congregation with any gumption eventually wants a place to call its own. And sure enough, at an 1891 revival, the fellowship got to talkin', and out of those conversations came plans to construct a sanctuary.

A revival sparking a building campaign. That's about as Methodist as it gets. What went up was a one-room structure, modest and purposeful.

But Morgan kept on being Morgan, and as the years went on and more room was needed, the building grew right along with the community. They added on. And on.

Now here is where the building itself becomes worth a slow look. The style is Carpenter Gothic, which means local craftsmen interpreted Gothic church architecture through the tools and timber they had on hand. But the builders didn't stop there.

They wove in some Greek Revival detailing, two grand traditions meeting in a small Texas town. And running through it all, those lancet windows, tall and pointed, pulling the eye upward the way a good church ought to. Then, between 1901 and 1902, they raised the belfry.

A bell tower finished the picture, gave the building its punctuation mark against the Bosque County sky. One congregation, a borrowed beginning, a revival that turned into blueprints, and a building that still stands there holding all of it.

What the marker says

Organized in 1889, the Morgan Methodist Church first held worship services in the Baptist church building. At an 1891 revival, the fellowship initiated plans to construct this sanctuary. Originally a one-room structure, the building was enlarged in later years as additional rooms were needed. The Carpenter Gothic building exhibits some Greek Revival detailing and features lancet windows and a 1901-02 belfry. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1983
