Hidalgo County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about the Former Hidalgo Post Office, right there in Hidalgo County. Now, some buildings earn their place in history through war, or fire, or the boots of famous men. But this one, this quiet little structure built in 1889, earned it the slow and steady way.

By simply refusing to disappear. It started as a general merchandise store. Practical.

Useful. The kind of place a town depends on without ever quite thinking about. But right from the beginning, one part of that building was set aside for something else entirely.

A post office. And here is where the numbers get interesting. When that store went up in 1889, the postal service operating inside it was already in its thirty-second year.

Thirty-two years of mail moving through Hidalgo before that building ever drew its first breath. The post office was the elder here, and the building had to grow up to meet it. The store brought with it a cast of characters worth remembering.

William Odell, the store owner, served as Postmaster. So did his wife, Josephine. And so did Gumaro, the son of co-owner Desiderio Rodriguez.

Three Postmasters, two families, one counter where you could presumably buy a sack of flour and mail a letter in the same trip. That arrangement held together until 1913, when the postal service finally moved on. But the building stayed.

Oldest in existence, the marker says, and it has the years to back that up. Some things in Texas survive by being grand. This one survived by being necessary, and then, once it was no longer necessary, by being old enough that nobody had the heart to knock it down.

Turns out, that's a fine strategy.

What the marker says

Oldest in existence. Built 1889 to house a general merchandise store. One part was reserved for the town's postal service, then in its 32nd year, served until 1913. Store owner William Odell, his wife Josephine, and Gumaro, son of co-owner Desiderio Rodriguez, were Postmasters. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark, 1965
