Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to give it its due. You're looking at a building that has outlasted just about everything around it. This is the last remaining of three brick barracks constructed in 1880 by the U.S.

Army, right here along the Rio Grande, built to quarter troops whose job was scouting and escort duty in one of the rougher stretches of Texas frontier. Three barracks. One left standing.

Let that sink in a moment. The other two are gone, and this one endured. The structure originally had four large rooms, divided by a central stairway.

Simple, solid, functional. And here's the part worth pausing on: the exterior has not been altered. What you see on the outside is, near as matters, what the Army put up in 1880.

The walls don't lie. The soldiers who occupied this building went on to serve in the Spanish-American War, and then both world wars. Think about that lineage.

Men who drilled and slept and lived within these brick walls carried something of the place with them into conflicts that shaped the entire twentieth century. In 1947, ownership of Fort McIntosh was transferred to Laredo Junior College. A military post became a place of learning.

The last barracks still standing, still solid, still unaltered on the outside, still telling the story of everyone who ever passed through its four rooms and up that central stairway. Some buildings just refuse to let you forget.
