Falls County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how I'm gonna pass it along to you. Out here in Falls County, there's a house with roots that go all the way back to 1881, when the Johann and Theresia Bockholt family first settled in this area. They put down stakes, they built something, and that something kept on growing long after them.

Now fast forward a generation. In 1912, Frank Bockholt and his wife Julia took what was already standing on this site, a modest two-room house, and they built onto it. They weren't just adding rooms.

They were making a place to raise a large family, and that is exactly what they did. The home they created shows something that architects and history folks find genuinely interesting. It's built in the American Four Square design, and it sits right at the crossroads of two styles, Craftsman and late Victorian.

Not quite one, not quite the other. A transition, they call it. And the original detailing is still there, still intact, still telling on itself if you know how to look.

Then in 1933, after Johann and Theresia were gone, Frank and Julia inherited a portion of the estate. The land, the house, the history, all of it passed into their hands officially. Now Frank and Julia were not the kind of people to sit quietly on the sidelines of a community.

Both of them were active in community life. But Frank, well, Frank had something extra. A musical talent.

And he put it to work for fifty-two years as organist at the Church of the Visitation. Fifty-two years. You think about how many Sundays that is, how many seasons turned while that man sat at that instrument and played, and it starts to feel less like a job and more like a calling.

The house still stands. The detailing still holds. And somewhere in the air around Falls County, if you listen right, maybe there's still a little music in it.

What the marker says

The Johann and Theresia Bockholt family settled in this area in 1881. In 1933, their son Frank and his wife, Julia, inherited a portion of the estate. Both were active in community life, and he is remembered for his musical talent and his 52 years as organist at the Church of the Visitation. They built on to an existing two-room house at this site in 1912 and reared their large family here. The American Four Square design exhibits a transition between Craftsman and late Victorian styling, and the home retains its original detailing. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 2003
