Here's what the official marker has to say, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Down in Brewster County, there's a house that's been standin' since 1890, and the walls alone could tell you why. Trinidad Garcia, ranch hand, built it that year, and he did not build it to blow away.

Those original four rooms had adobe walls runnin' anywhere from twenty-seven to thirty-three inches thick. Thirty-three inches. That's not a wall, friends, that's a commitment.

Cool in the summer, quiet in a storm, and built like it intended to outlast everybody who ever had opinions about it. And for many years, that house became something more than shelter; it became a social center, the kind of place a community gathers around, pulls up a chair, stays a while. Then comes 1926, and Thomas Valadez, a leading local merchant, makes it his family home.

The Valadez family didn't just move in, they grew with the place. Those original four rooms became eight. The house expanded the way good things do when the right people tend to them.

So what Trinidad Garcia raised with those thick adobe walls back in 1890 is still standing today, larger, layered with more lives than it started with, and rooted in Brewster County soil like it has absolutely nowhere else to be.
