Houston County, Texas

Duane's take

The official marker's got the story, and here's my tellin' of it — so let's see what the ground remembers. Now, Glenwood Cemetery sits right in the original townsite of Crockett, Texas. And before you ask — yes, that name carries weight, and this place is old enough to carry it.

Houston County was created and the county seat founded in 1837, and this cemetery opened soon after. That means when the ink on the county's founding was barely dry, folks were already setting aside ground for the long sleep. What makes Glenwood something more than old, though, is who's resting there.

The marker talks about early Texas heroes and statesmen — and in 1837 Texas, that phrase is not thrown around lightly. These were people who built something out of raw territory, and some of them paid for it. Then there's this detail the marker drops almost like a quiet aside, the kind that stops you mid-step: buried in that cemetery is a friend who was visited by David Crockett himself — on his way to the Alamo.

Think on that for a moment. Crockett passed through, stopped to see someone he knew, and then kept riding toward one of the most famous last stands in history. That friend lived.

And eventually came to rest right here in Crockett, Texas. The cemetery also holds a grandnephew of United States President Monroe. And the city's first elected mayor.

Some places mark time on a calendar. Glenwood marks it in the ground — heroes, statesmen, a goodbye from a man riding toward legend. That'll stay with you.
