Duane's take
Here's what the official marker has to say, and I'll do my best to give it its due. Glenwood Cemetery. Crockett's oldest burial ground, sitting right there in the original townsite of Crockett, Texas.
Now, Houston County was created and the county seat founded in 1837, and this cemetery opened soon after — which means the ground there has been keeping its secrets for a long, long time. We're talking about soil that remembers the early days of the Republic. You let that settle for a moment.
The people laid to rest in Glenwood aren't just names on old stones. They are early Texas heroes and statesmen. They include a grandnephew of United States President Monroe.
They include the city's first elected mayor. And then — and here's where the ground gets a little hallowed — they include a friend visited by David Crockett himself, on his way to the Alamo. Just think about that.
Crockett passed through, stopped to see a friend, and that friend is buried right here. History has a way of leaving fingerprints on a place, and Glenwood Cemetery has more than most. The oldest burial ground in Crockett, Texas — and now you know what it's been holding all this time.
