Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how I'm gonna tell it to you. Way back in 1878, seventeen souls gathered together out in the Greenbrier community of Johnson County and said, we're building something here. Something that lasts.

Those seventeen charter members constituted the Greenbrier Baptist Church, and friend, they were not wrong about the lasting part. Now, in those early days, before anybody had gotten around to actually constructing a sanctuary (because when you're a pioneer, the list of things to build is considerably longer than the time you've got to build them) the Baptist congregation didn't go it alone. They pulled up benches right alongside the Methodist congregation and held services together in the community schoolhouse.

Two different denominations, one roof, and I'd imagine more than a few spirited conversations after the final amen. That community kept right on growin', kept right on changin', and in 1917 something else happened; the Stubblefield School merged with the local district, and just like that, Greenbrier got itself a new name. The whole community was renamed Greenfield.

The name changed, but the church? The church held. For over a century, Greenbrier Baptist Church stood as a center of activity for the surrounding area, led along the way by many prominent pastors and Johnson County pioneers.

Seventeen members in 1878. A century and more of Sundays. Some things, when they're built right, just don't quit.

What the marker says

Constituted in 1878 with 17 charter members, this pioneer church originally served early settlers of the Greenbrier community, renamed Greenfield in 1917 when the Stubblefield School merged with the local district. Before the construction of sanctuaries, the Baptist and Methodist congregations met together in the community's schoolhouse. A center of activity in the surrounding area for over a century, the Greenbrier Baptist Church has been led by many prominent pastors and Johnson County pioneers.
