Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about the Hayes House in Lamar County. Now settle in, because this one's about the kind of home that does the talkin' for you. John M.

Hayes was born in 1869, and by 1906 he had purchased a piece of property in Paris and set about constructing something worth noticing. Not one story. Not two.

Three stories of frame construction, rising up like a quiet declaration. Hayes was a businessman, and not just any kind of businessman. He managed the substantial financial holdings of his family, which tells you something about the weight of responsibility the man carried.

He was born in 1869 and died in 1918, and in the years between, he built a life that left a mark you could see from the street. After his death, his widow, Jo Elizabeth, continued to reside in that house. She lived there until her own passing in 1961.

Think about that. Decade after decade, that home kept standing, kept watching Paris change around it. Now, what makes the Hayes House worth pullin' over for is the craft of the thing.

Restrained classical detailing on the exterior, which is a polished way of sayin' it carries itself with dignity. But step inside, and the ornamentation gets intricate. The outside says old money, quiet confidence.

The inside says they meant every bit of it. The marker calls it a reflection of the status of a prominent Paris family at the turn of the century, and honestly, the house doesn't argue the point. Three stories.

One family. And a building still standin' as proof that some things are built to last.

What the marker says

John M. Hayes (1869-1918) constructed this three-story frame residence soon after he purchased the property in 1906. A businessman, Hayes managed the substantial financial holdings of his family. After his death, his widow, Jo Elizabeth (d. 1961), continued to reside here. The home, which features restrained classical detailing on the exterior and intricate interior ornamentation, reflects the status of a prominent Paris family at the turn of the century.
