Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll pass it along just the same. Now, some stories start with a bang: outlaws, oil strikes, wild rivers. But some of the best ones start quiet, with a handful of folks who just decided to show up.

This is one of those. Back in 1890, a congregation gathered at a site just south of town and called themselves Bethel Methodist Episcopal Church, South. That's a name with some weight to it (formal, deliberate, the kind of name people chose when they meant to stick around).

And stick around they did. For years, circuit-riding ministers served those members; preachers on horseback covering more ground than most folks covered in a lifetime, rolling into town, tending to souls, then riding on again before the dust settled. The congregation held things together between visits, which'll tell you something about the kind of people they were.

Then came a move. Between November of 1909 and March of 1910, the congregation and the church building itself relocated to Heath. Not just the people; the building.

By 1916, that original structure had been replaced entirely. A new chapter, a new building, a new name waiting somewhere down the road. The congregation kept weaving itself into the life of the community, year after year, the way a good church does: quietly, steadily, becoming part of the fabric of the place.

Then 1974 brought another new building. And 1981 brought something the congregation had never had before in all those decades: their very first full-time pastor. Took them ninety-one years to get there, but they got there.

That's not a story about waiting. That's a story about endurance. Heath Methodist Church is still out there, still serving, still part of that community.

What the marker says

Founded in 1890 at a site just south of town, this church originally was named Bethel Methodist Episcopal Church, South. The congregation and the church building moved to Heath between November 1909 and March 1910, and the original building was replaced by 1916. Circuit-riding ministers served the members for many years. The congregation became an integral part of the community. They moved into a new building in 1974, and called their first full-time pastor in 1981. The church continues to serve its community with a variety of ministries. (1991)
