Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker says about Helena Kimble Dill Nelson, out of Cherokee County. Now, some names get carved into history for what they did. Others get carved in for who they brought into the world.

Helena Kimble Dill Nelson, born in 1770 over in Maryland, she's in that second company, and the story the marker tells is one worth sitting with. In 1786, Helena Kimble married a man named James Dill. And not long after that, the two of them were on the move.

By 1793, they had pulled up stakes and landed in Nacogdoches, which at that time was sitting under Spanish rule. James Dill made his life there as an Indian trader, and he rose high enough in the community to serve as alcalde, that's mayor, from 1821 to 1823. A man of standing in a place still finding its footing.

But here's the detail that echoes down through time. In 1804, Helena gave birth to a child. And that child, according to the marker, is thought to have been the first Anglo-American born in Texas.

Think on that for a moment. All the history that would come roaring through this land, and it may well have started with Helena's child, in Nacogdoches, in 1804. James Dill died in 1825.

Helena was left to carry on. She did. In 1828, she gained title to Dill's land grant, the land that sits in what is now Cherokee County.

She moved onto that land, and not long after, she married again, a man named Wm. Nelson. Helena Kimble Dill Nelson lived until 1848.

Maryland-born, Spanish-Texas-tested, Cherokee County-rooted. And somewhere in that long arc of a life, she raised a child the marker says may have been the first Anglo-American born in all of Texas. History doesn't always announce itself.

Sometimes it just arrives, quiet, in 1804.
