Hutchinson County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about Holt School, up in Hutchinson County. Now, out in the northeastern corner of Hutchinson County, there stands a little wooden schoolhouse that has outlasted just about everything around it. And the story of how it got there, and why it's still standing, well, that's worth a few miles of road.

It starts with Hutchinson County itself, created in 1901. A county-wide public school district was established soon after. People began trickling into the area, and as they did, regional districts took shape.

Common School District No. 8 was established in that northeastern corner in 1902. The very next year, in 1903, the first schoolhouse went up. One room.

Built on land owned by a man named Benjamin Calvin Holt. Now, one room will only take you so far. By 1916, they needed more space, and so a two-room schoolhouse was constructed.

Here's the part that sticks with you: every stick of lumber, every nail and board and building material used to put that structure up had to be hauled in from Texoma, Oklahoma. That is not a short haul across easy country. But they did it.

And what they built was no rough shack. Simple wooden construction, yes. But the builders gave it classical revival style detailings, particularly in that gable entrance.

Oversized windows. Decorative wood shingles. There is a quiet pride in those details, the kind that says the people of this community believed their children deserved something worth building.

Regular school classes were held there until 1935, when students began attending school in Spearman. So the classrooms went quiet. But the building did not.

That little two-room schoolhouse kept right on working. It became the place where the community gathered for worship services. Where weddings were held.

Where funerals were held. Where women sat together for quilting bees and neighbors came out for local theater productions. And it has continued to serve as an election polling place, which means in some fashion, it never stopped being a place where the community made decisions together.

In 1949, the school buildings and grounds were deeded to the Holt Cemetery Association. Which means the community, in its own way, made sure the place would be looked after. A one-room structure in 1903.

A two-room schoolhouse hauled in from Oklahoma in 1916. Classrooms until 1935. And after that, still standing, still serving.

Some buildings just refuse to be done.

What the marker says

A county-wide public school district was established soon after Hutchinson County was created in 1901. As more people began to settle in the area, regional school districts were formed. Common School District No. 8 was established in the northeastern corner of the county in 1902. The first schoolhouse, located on land owned by Benjamin Calvin Holt, was a one-room structure built in 1903. This two-room schoolhouse was constructed in 1916 with lumber and other building materials hauled in from Texoma, Oklahoma. The simple wooden structure exhibits classical revival style detailings, especially in the gable entrance. Other features include oversized windows and decorative wood shingles. Regular school classes were held here until 1935, when students began attending school in Spearman. The building, however, remained a community gathering place. The site of worship services, weddings and funerals, it has also hosted community activities such as quilting bees and local theater productions and continues to serve as an election polling place. The school buildings and grounds were deeded to the Holt Cemetery Association in 1949. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1989
