Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Way out in Milam County, in the little town of Buckholts, there's a congregation that's been holding things together since before the twentieth century even got started. Hope Lutheran Church.
And the story begins, as so many good Texas stories do, with twelve people and a whole lot of determination. Twelve charter members, that's it, gathered together in 1890 under the guidance of a German missionary by the name of Julius Schroeder. No grand sanctuary, no steeple catching the afternoon light.
Just homes. And a local school building. That's where they worshipped in those early days, wherever there was room and a willing roof.
Now, a congregation needs a shepherd, and in 1891 the Reverend H. F. Daude was called to serve.
And something about that calling took hold, because this church kept growing, kept reaching, kept believing. Then came 1901, and they finally built it. The first sanctuary.
You can almost hear the hammers. That structure stood and served until 1925, when a second building rose to replace it. And here's a detail worth sitting with for a moment.
Some of those worship services were conducted entirely in the German language, all the way until 1949. Generations of families in Buckholts praying and singing and hearing the Word in the tongue their people brought over. That's not a footnote.
That's a whole world carried forward in sound. Then 1975 brought yet another new sanctuary, the congregation still growing, still planting roots deeper into that Milam County soil. Hope Lutheran holds the distinction of being the oldest church in Buckholts, and its membership, predominantly German and Czech, is a living record of the communities that built this corner of Texas.
Twelve people showed up in 1890 with nothing but faith and a borrowed schoolroom. That's how you build something that lasts.
What the marker says
Founded in 1890, this congregation began with twelve charter members led by German missionary Julius Schroeder. Early worship services were held in homes and in a local school building. The Rev. H. F. Daude was called to serve the church in 1891, and in 1901 the first sanctuary was erected. It was replaced by a second structure in 1925. Some worship services were conducted in the German language until 1949. A new sanctuary was erected in 1975. The oldest church in Buckholts, Hope Lutheran serves a predominantly German and Czech membership.
