Duane's take
Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about Hope Lutheran Church in Fort Bend County. Now settle in, because this one starts the way a lot of good Texas stories start: with one man showing up somewhere he wasn't expected, and a community deciding maybe that wasn't such a bad thing. Back in the nineteen-tens, the Reverend C.
Merkel was pastoring an Evangelical Lutheran church over in Needville. But Merkel had his eye on Beasley, and he came calling, inviting local Lutherans to services held right there in the Beasley School building. Now, they could've politely nodded and stayed home.
They didn't. Many attended. And once a congregation starts gatherin', well, something tends to take root.
The people petitioned the Reverend Apfelbach to minister this new congregation, and they found a home at the Modena Schoolhouse. February of nineteen eighteen, the charter members made it official, organizing and calling their church Die Ev. Lutherische Hoffnungs Gemeinde.
Services ran twice monthly in those early days, conducted in both German and English, which tells you something right there about who these people were and where they'd come from. The congregation kept growing, and in nineteen twenty-four, the members dedicated their first sanctuary. Their own building.
Their own walls and roof and altar. From there, they added a parish house and a hall, and the programs, the worship, the outreach, all of it kept reaching further into the community. What started as an open invitation in a schoolhouse turned into something that just kept building, year after year.
That's Hope Lutheran, and it's still serving its corner of Fort Bend County today.
What the marker says
In the 1910s, the Rev. C. Merkel, pastor of an Evangelical Lutheran church in Needville, came to Beasley and invited local Lutherans to services held in the Beasley School building. Many attended, and they later petitioned the Rev. Apfelbach to minister the new congregation. Meeting at the Modena Schoolhouse, charter members organized in February 1918, calling the church Die Ev. Lutherische Hoffnungs Gemeinde. The church initially met twice monthly, with services in German and English. In 1924, members dedicated their first sanctuary. The congregation grew, later adding a parish house and hall. Through its programs, worship and outreach, the church continues to serve its community. (2003)
