Duane's take

The way the marker in Milam County tells it, here's the story of Hope Lutheran Memorial Park, and I'm just the voice passing it along. Now, there's a kind of quiet foresight in what the German Evangelisch Lutheran Hoffnung Church of Buckholts did back in 1902. They didn't wait for trouble to come knocking.

They looked ahead, saw what their community would need, and they acted. That year, the congregation purchased an original one and a half acres for a burial ground, buying the land from Thomas and Eva Blinka. The first names recorded in that ground tell you how quickly the need became real.

Josef Neuman, born 1902, died 1903. A life so brief it nearly fits on a single line. And J.C.

Richter, born 1831, died 1904, a man who had seen an entire century come and go. Those two graves, as different as any two stories could be, mark the cemetery's beginning use. For a few years the land was simply used, quietly, faithfully.

Then in 1911, the deed for the land and the access road was formally recorded. Put down in ink. Made official.

The Hope Lutheran Church Congregation didn't stop there. Over the years they added acreage, kept making improvements, kept tending what they'd started. And since 1962, an association has overseen the affairs and upkeep of the site.

That's the thing about a place like this. It starts with one and a half acres and a congregation thinking ahead. And it becomes something that chronicles much of the heritage of an entire community.

The Buckholts Community, written not in newspapers or courthouses alone, but out here, in the ground, in the names, in the keeping.

What the marker says

Anticipating the needs of its members, the German Evangelisch Lutheran Hoffnung Church of Buckholts purchased the original 1.5 acres for this burial ground from Thomas and Eva Blinka in 1902. The graves of Josef Neuman (1902-1903) and J.C. Richter (1831-1904) date the cemetery's beginning use. In 1911, the deed for the land and access road was formally recorded. The Hope Lutheran Church Congregation has added acreage over the years and continued to make improvements. Since 1962, an association has overseen the affairs and upkeep of this site that chronicles much of the heritage of the Buckholts Community. Historic Texas Cemetery - 2001
