Duane's take
The way the marker tells it, here's the story of Hudgins Cemetery as Duane found it down in Brazoria County. Now, some places just sit quiet and let the years pile up around them. Hudgins Cemetery is one of those places.
Established circa 1853, it has been holdin' its ground in Brazoria County longer than most folks care to count. Circa, that little word does a lot of work out here in Texas. It means somebody knows the cemetery was there early, real early, but the land wasn't exactly keepin' a careful calendar.
What we know is this: around 1853, somebody started burying their people in this spot, and the ground accepted them, and the name Hudgins took hold. That's the whole of what the marker gives us, and sometimes that's enough. A name, a place, a date that reaches back past the Civil War, past the Republic, into the quiet years when Brazoria County was still figuring out what it was going to be.
Hudgins Cemetery has been patient through all of it. Still there. Still keeping watch.
