Andrews County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll give it to you straight. Out here in Andrews County, there's a building that outlasted a whole town. Shafter Lake, they called it.

The first settlement in Andrews County, and at one time, its largest town. Let that sink in a moment. The largest town.

And now, standing out here on this landscape, there is exactly one building left to prove it ever happened. One. The Irwin Ranch House.

Built in 1908, and still standing while everything around it faded into memory and dust. But here's the part that gets you. Those concrete blocks, the walls you can reach out and touch right now, they weren't hauled in from somewhere else.

They were hand pressed. By hand. From the sand of Shafter Lake itself.

The very ground beneath that old settlement gave up its sand to build the walls that would be the last thing standing when the settlement was gone. That's not just construction. That's a kind of stubborn poetry.

The town of Shafter Lake has come and gone, risen and faded, first and largest and then simply not. But the Irwin Ranch House is still here, built from the land, outlasting everything, and not going anywhere.

What the marker says

Only building remaining in old Shafter Lake, first settlement in Andrews County and at one time its largest town. Built 1908. Concrete blocks, hand pressed from sand of Shafter Lake, are the original frame. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1967
