San Jacinto County, Texas

Duane's take

The marker for Isaac Jones in San Jacinto County tells it like this, and I'm just the one passin' it along. Now, Isaac Jones — born October 4, 1793, in Mississippi — was the kind of man they had a word for even back then: individualistic. That's the word on the marker, and I reckon they meant it as a compliment.

A man who came to Texas on his own terms and stayed that way. He moved here in 1834, and the land he received was a Mexican land grant on the west bank of the Trinity River. Think about that for a moment — the Trinity River, winding through what would become San Jacinto County, and there was Isaac Jones, setting down roots before Texas was even Texas.

When the Republic of Texas needed men, Jones answered. He served three months in the army of the Texas Republic, between 1836 and 1838. Three months — short by some measures, but this was a man who clearly had other work to do.

And that work? Well, by 1858, Isaac Jones was operating a ferry at Jones Bluff. He was still at it in 1861.

Picture that crossing — the Trinity rolling along, and Jones working that ferry back and forth, connecting one bank to the other, year after year. He shared his life with his wife, Elizabeth, born a Martin before she took his name. Isaac Jones died May 27, 1878.

He'd been on this earth since 1793 — born in Mississippi, died in Texas, with a land grant, a ferry, and a river bend that carried his name. That's a life that left a mark long before any marker did.
