San Jacinto County, Texas

Duane's take

The way the marker tells it, here's what this spot once was. You're rolling through San Jacinto County, and the land out there holds a story that connects two names you don't often hear side by side. This was Council Hill — home of Vernon B.

Lea, who happened to be the brother of Mrs. Sam Houston. Now just let that sit for a second.

The brother-in-law of Sam Houston, living right here on this ground. And that family connection meant something, because General Houston himself came to this very place — frequently, the marker says — to meet with delegations of Alabama Indians. Not once, not twice.

Frequently. Whatever business passed between them on this hill, whatever councils were held, whatever words were spoken — this ground heard all of it. Council Hill.

The name says it plain.
