Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'm passing it along just as it stands. Now, you want to talk about a church with roots, let me tell you about Israel Chapel A. M.

E. Church in Port Arthur. It starts, like so many good things do, with two men and a mission.

Frederick Shepherd had already helped the Reverend Napoleon Harris establish an African Methodist Episcopal mission over in nearby Sabine, back in 1902. One mission, apparently, was not enough for either of them. By 1903, Shepherd had founded a new church, right there at his own Port Arthur home, with Reverend Harris stepping in as pastor.

A man opens his home, a minister steps to the front, and something lasting begins. In 1904, the first sanctuary went up, on property donated by the Port Arthur Townsite and Land Company. And that building was carrying a double burden in the best possible way.

It wasn't just a house of worship. It was also the area's first public school for African Americans. One roof, two vital purposes, and a community being built beneath it.

As the years moved along, membership kept growing. And when membership grows, walls have a way of feeling smaller. So they built larger sanctuaries, and then larger still.

The name Israel Chapel A. M. E.

Church was officially recorded in 1959, putting a permanent name to what had been growing for more than half a century. And here's the part that lands quietest but hits hardest: the church continues to serve the community. From a man's home in 1903, to a donated lot in 1904, to a name set in the record books in 1959, and still going.

That's not just a congregation. That's a through-line.

What the marker says

Frederick Shepherd, who helped the Rev. Napoleon Harris establish an African Methodist Episcopal (A. M. E.) mission in nearby Sabine in 1902, founded this church at his Port Arthur home in 1903 with the Rev. Harris serving as pastor. The first sanctuary, built here in 1904 on property donated by the Port Arthur Townsite and Land Company, also housed the area's first public school for African Americans. As membership expanded successively larger sanctuaries were built. the name Israel Chapel A. M. E. Church was officially recorded in 1959. The church continues to serve the community.
