Brown County, Texas

Duane's take

The way the official marker tells it, here's the story of the J. A. Walker House in Brown County.

J. A. Walker was a Brownwood businessman and civic leader, and in 1901 he built himself a home that said exactly what he wanted it to say about who he was.

Walker, who died in 1944, was a prominent Texas Baptist and an early benefactor to Howard Payne University. A man of standing, in other words, and he made sure his house reflected that standing. The style is Colonial Revival, chosen with intention, and the details are worth slowing down for.

There's an ornate portico. A wide wraparound veranda. Intricate ornamentation across the whole of it.

You look at a house like that and you understand, without anyone having to tell you, that the man who commissioned it was somebody in this community. Now here's the part that speaks to something lasting. That house stayed in the Walker family for over seventy-five years.

Generation holding on to what the last generation built. Then in 1979, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Barnes restored it, and the care they put into that work is recorded right there on the base of the marker.

Some houses are built to impress a single season. The J. A.

Walker House has been impressing people for well over a century now, and it doesn't appear to be finished.
