Carson County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'm just the one passin' it along. Out here in Carson County, there's a building with more history in its bones than most structures ever dream of. The Jackson General Store.

And friend, this place didn't just sit in one spot and collect dust. It started life half a mile to the east, at the original townsite of White Deer. Then, in 1908, when the present townsite was established, somebody decided that store was coming with them.

They moved the whole commercial structure, hauled it right over to where it stands today. That kind of commitment to a building tells you something about the people inside it. And the people inside it were J.

C. Jackson and his wife Dolly. J.

C. Jackson was described, right there on the marker, as a prominent leader in the development of White Deer. Now that's not a title you pick up on a slow Tuesday.

The man was mayor. He was postmaster. He served as county judge from 1935 to 1941.

And then he came back as precinct commissioner from 1947 all the way to 1966, the year he passed. Dolly Jackson left in 1957. Together, the two of them founded the First Presbyterian Church of White Deer.

And through all of it, the public service, the commerce, the community building, the Jacksons kept their home right there inside the general store building. Not nearby. Not down the road.

Inside it. The store wasn't just where they worked. It was where they lived.

Where they raised what they raised and built what they built. One building, moved once, that held a general merchandise business, a home, and two lives woven into the fabric of an entire town. Some structures just carry more weight than their walls suggest.

What the marker says

This commercial structure was built at the original townsite of White Deer (0.5 mi. E). It was moved here in 1908, when the present townsite was established. It housed the general merchandise business of J. C. Jackson (d. 1966), a prominent leader in the development of White Deer. In his career as a public servant, Jackson was mayor, postmaster, county judge (1935-41), and precinct commissioner (1947-66). In addition, he and his wife Dolly (d. 1957) were founders of the First Presbyterian Church. The Jacksons maintained their home in the general store building for many years.
