Here's the story as the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. James Hogan Doyle was a man who came a long way: in miles, in years, and in standing. Born in South Carolina in 1846, he fought with the Confederacy during the Civil War, and the marker notes he was recognized for his bravery.

Now, what exactly he did to earn that recognition, the record doesn't spell out; but the fact that it followed him all the way to Texas tells you something. He made his way here about 1870, and he landed in the Granbury area. By 1876, he wasn't just passing through.

He purchased property right there in town. This was a man planting roots. And once planted, those roots ran deep.

Doyle established himself as a prominent merchant, a banker, and a civic leader: not one of those things, all three. He served several terms as treasurer for Hood County, which means the people of Hood County kept putting their trust in him, and he kept showing up to earn it. Then in 1879, he married Mary Kate Stringfellow (born in 1861, and a member of an early Granbury family).

So he'd married into the fabric of the place too. Their home on this very site was built about 1880, and by 1900 it had been enlarged to accommodate their family of three children. A man arrives in Texas with his reputation and not much else, builds a business, a family, a home, and a legacy in the same town; and that property stayed in the Doyle family all the way until 1939.

James Hogan Doyle lived until 1933. Mary Kate Stringfellow Doyle lived until 1942. Between them, they saw nearly two centuries worth of Texas.

That's not a footnote. That's a life.

He settled in the Granbury area and purchased this property in town in 1876. Doyle established himself as a prominent merchant, banker and civic leader, serving several terms as treasurer for Hood County. In 1879, he married Mary Kate Stringfellow (1861-1942), member of an early Granbury family.
