Duane's take

Here's how the official marker on John Robin Heard tells it, and I'll do my best to do the man justice. Now, some family lines you can trace back a good long ways, and the Heard line is one of them. Way back in 1720, his people came over to America from County Tyrone, Ireland, and they put down roots.

Generations later, in 1794, John Robin Heard came into the world in Georgia, carrying all that history on his shoulders before he'd done a single thing to earn it himself. He spent his first several decades in Georgia, but Texas has a way of callin' to a certain kind of man, and in 1853, Heard answered. He came to Cass County, and he did not come to sit still.

He founded the nearby town of Cussetta. He acquired large landholdings across the area. The man was building something, and he knew it.

Then in 1861, with the marker of a man who thinks about what outlasts him, he donated property for this very cemetery. His home stood near this site, standing watch over this land, all the way until the 1940s. Long after Heard himself was gone, that house kept the story present.

Now, the personal chapter of John Robin Heard's life carries its own quiet weight. His first wife was Martha Hopkins. After her death, he married her sister, Mary Hopkins.

Two women from the same family, two lives joined to his, and from those two marriages came twelve children. John Robin Heard died in 1866, leaving behind a town he founded, land he shaped, a cemetery he gave, and a family that numbered well into double digits. That is not a small life.

That is not a small life at all.
