Rusk County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about John Strong and Mary Ann Whatley Strong, out in Rusk County. Now, if you're gonna plant roots somewhere, you'd best pick your spot with care. John Strong and his wife Mary Ann, she was a Whatley before she married, they were Georgia people, born and raised.

John came into this world in 1806, Mary in 1809. And somewhere around 1849, the two of them pointed themselves toward Texas and didn't look back. They landed in the eastern part of Rusk County, and that word pioneer, it's not just decoration here.

This was the kind of country that asked something of you. And John and Mary Strong gave it. What they helped build wasn't just a homestead, it was a community taking shape.

They were part of setting aside land for the local Methodist congregation. They helped establish this very cemetery, the ground you might be standing near right now. And then there was the Church Hill Male and Female Academy, a school that opened its doors and ran through the 1850s, educating the children of that raw, young corner of Texas.

Their home sat close to a spring, east of this site. A spring, in that country, was life itself. Fresh water, a reason to stay put, a place other folks might gather around.

John Strong died in 1854. Mary Ann outlived him by a long stretch, not passing until 1898. She saw that eastern Rusk County community grow from something they helped clear and consecrate into something that endured.

Two Georgia natives who migrated about 1849, helped lay out a church, a school, and a cemetery, and then became part of the land they shaped. That's a life that leaves a mark.

What the marker says

Georgia natives John (1806-1854) and Mary Strong (1809-1898) migrated to Texas about 1849 and were pioneer settlers of eastern Rusk County. They helped set aside land for the local Methodist congregation, the Church Hill Male and Female Academy, which operated in the 1850s, and this cemetery. Their home was located near a spring east of this site.
