Kaufman County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how I'll tell it to you. Now, before Texas was even a decade into being part of the United States, the legislature was already carving up the land, drawing lines, naming places, planting flags of identity all across the map. And on February 26, 1848, they drew a new set of lines and called what was inside them Kaufman County.

But a county needs more than lines. It needs organizing. So they let it breathe for a few months, and then on August 7, 1848, Kaufman County got itself properly organized and ready for business.

Now, who was Kaufman? That's the heart of it. David Spangler Kaufman.

Born 1812, died 1851. A man who didn't have a long run, but made every year count. He came to Texas in 1837 and put down roots at Nacogdoches, which, if you know your Texas geography, was about as deep into the thick of early Texas life as you could get.

That was the frontier of civilization, the crossroads of ambition. And David Kaufman was an ambitious man. He found his way into the Texas Congress, where he served from 1839 all the way through 1845.

That's six years of helping shape a republic, an actual, sovereign republic, before Texas ever joined the Union. Then, when Texas did join, Kaufman stepped right up to the next stage and became a Member of the United States Congress. Republic to Union.

State legislature to federal halls. The man moved with the moment. He was gone by 1851.

The county bearing his name was barely three years old when David Spangler Kaufman passed. But here's the thing about having a county named after you: your name stays on the map long after you leave the story. And right at the center of that county sits Kaufman, the county seat, carrying the name forward mile after mile, year after year, down every road that leads into town.

Not a bad kind of permanence for a man who only got thirty-nine years.
