Keeter Cemetery

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Out here in Wise County, there's a patch of ground that's been holding the stories of one community for well over a century, and that community is Keeter. The Keeter Cemetery.

It's been the sole graveyard serving this place since 1882. Not one of several. The only one.

For over a hundred years, this was where Keeter laid its people to rest. Now the oldest recorded gravesite belongs to someone who barely had a chance to leave a mark on this world at all. Ida Mae Ryan.

Born 1881, gone 1882. One year of life, and yet here she is: the first name written down in the record of this ground. There's a weight to that, if you sit with it a moment.

The man the whole community is named for, Albert Lafayette Keeter, he donated this very property for use as a cemetery in 1891. Gave the land so his neighbors would have somewhere to go when their time came. His daughter, Leonah, is thought to be buried here among them.

But Albert Lafayette Keeter himself? He left this area. And the best anyone can figure, he's believed to be buried way over in Hardeman County.

The man who gave Keeter its cemetery isn't resting in it. Beneath the Texas sky out here lie at least three veterans of the American Civil War and two veterans of World War II. Different wars.

Different worlds. Same ground. That's Keeter Cemetery: a place given by a man who'd eventually leave, tended by a community that stayed, and holding within it more than a hundred years of lives lived and lost in this corner of Wise County.

What the marker says

For over 100 years beginning in 1882 this cemetery has been the sole graveyard serving the community of Keeter. The oldest recorded gravesite in the cemetery is that of Ida Mae Ryan (1881-1882). Albert Lafayette Keeter, for whom the community of Keeter was named, donated this property for use as a cemetery in 1891. While Keeter's daughter, Leonah, is thought to be buried here, he left this area and is believed to buried in Hardeman County. At least three veterans of the American Civil War and two veterans of World War II are buried here.
