Duane's take
Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about Kildare Cemetery, out in Cass County. Now, every settlement eventually needs two things: a place for the living, and a place for the dead. Out in the Kildare area, as folks were putting down roots and building something out of this plantation and timber country, that second need came calling.
And when it did, the Moor family, local plantation owners, answered it. They donated the land. That's how this story begins.
The earliest burial they can date with certainty is Risdon Moor, born 1803, died 1868. But here's the thing the marker is careful to tell you: older burials likely exist. The ground out there may hold secrets the records never caught.
The pioneers didn't always wait on paperwork. The story doesn't stop with that first donation, though. It keeps going, the way good community stories do.
John T. Moore donated another acre in 1937, adding room for more of Cass County's own. Then, in 1982, an association formed, and that association has continued to expand and improve the site right on up to the present day.
And since 1980, every year, the Kildare Memorial Day Ceremony gathers to honor the veterans buried there. Every single year. That's not a one-time gesture.
That's a commitment. What the marker calls this place is a chronicle. A chronicle of the pioneers and families who made this plantation and timber area of Cass County their home.
The community has a long history, those are the marker's own words, of actively caring for this site. Not just visiting it. Caring for it.
Some places just hold a community together, even after the people in them are gone. Kildare Cemetery is one of those places.
What the marker says
As the Kildare area was being settled, the need for a cemetery was met by the donation of land from the Moor family, local plantation owners. The earliest dated burial is that of Risdon Moor (1803-1868), but older burials likely exist. John T. Moore donated another acre in 1937 and an association formed in 1982 has continued to expand and improve the site. Since 1980, the Kildare Memorial Day Ceremony annually honors its veterans. The community has a long history of actively caring for this site that remains as a chronicle of the pioneers and families that made this plantation and timber area of Cass County their home.
