Comal County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'm passing it along to you straight. Way out in Comal County, where the hills still hold their silence pretty well, there's a one-room stone chapel that's been standing longer than most people care to remember. Let me take you back to where it begins.

German families started settling this area in 1845, and when you've traveled that far from home, you find a way to hold onto what matters. So Catholic worship services were held in a private home first, then in a log chapel, because faith doesn't wait for fine architecture. It makes do.

Now, that arrangement served the Honey Creek community for a good while, but the story turns in 1878. That's when Johann Adam Kneupper and his wife, Margarethe, stepped forward and donated the land. Not just the land either.

They aided the residents of Honey Creek in erecting what would become the Kneupper Chapel. And here's the part that'll make you look twice when you pass it. That chapel is built of stone quarried right out of the nearby hills.

The very ground those settlers walked on became the walls they worshipped within. The chapel served as the home of St. Joseph's Catholic Church services from the time it was raised all the way through 1892.

One room. Stone walls. A community that built something lasting out of what the land gave them.

Some stories don't need to be tall at all. They just need to be true.

What the marker says

After German families began settling in this area in 1845, Catholic worship services were held in a private home and in a log chapel. In 1878 Johann Adam Kneupper and his wife, Margarethe, donated the land and aided residents of the Honey Creek community in erecting this one-room chapel. Built of stone quarried from nearby hills, the Kneupper Chapel was used for services of St. Joseph's Catholic Church until 1892. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1983
