Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say, and I'll be straight with you, this one's as sparse as the Chihuahuan Desert at high noon. La Isla Cemetery, out in El Paso County. Established in 1910.

That's it. That's the whole foundation of the story right there, one year, one place, one purpose. Somebody looked out at that land and said, this is where we remember our people.

And so it began. Over a century has passed since that first burial, that first quiet gathering, that first name committed to the earth of El Paso County. Then in 2016, somebody made it official in a different way.

La Isla was designated a Historic Texas Cemetery. The land that's been holding its stories since 1910 finally got the formal recognition it had earned. Some places don't need a long inscription to carry weight.

La Isla Cemetery had been doing its work long before anyone put words on a marker, and it'll keep doing it long after.
