Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Way down in Hidalgo County, in the city of Pharr, there stands a church with a story that starts not with grand ceremony, but with a quiet, determined ask. The year was 1912.

A group of Spanish-speaking residents walked up to the Anglo Methodist Church and said, plainly and sincerely, that they wanted a place of worship of their own. Now, that takes a certain kind of courage, going hat in hand to ask for something that ought to have been there all along. And here's the thing.

It worked. The Pharr Townsite Company donated the land, a small church went up, and by 1913, it was organized and open. The second oldest church in the city of Pharr, and the first to minister to Pharr's Spanish-speaking Protestants.

That's not a footnote. That's a foundation. They called it, at first, The Mexican Methodist Church.

Straightforward, no apology, that's what it was. But names have a way of shifting as communities grow into themselves. Sometime in the 1940s the name became North Pharr Latin American Methodist Church, a longer name for a congregation that was finding a larger sense of who it was.

And then, in 1970, it became what it is today, La Trinidad United Methodist Church of Pharr. Three names across the decades, one unbroken congregation. The building changed too.

In 1959 a new plot of land was acquired and a new sanctuary rose on it. Then in 1995 came a larger facility still, the congregation quite literally outgrowing its walls. And through all of it, the youth groups, the outreach programs, the support to other mission churches, the work kept expanding outward.

A small church built on donated land, born from a simple request that someone actually said yes to. Sometimes that's all it takes.

What the marker says

THIS CHURCH, ORGANIZED IN 1913, IS THE SECOND OLDEST IN THE CITY AND THE FIRST TO MINISTER TO PHARR'S SPANISH-SPEAKING PROTESTANTS. AFTER A GROUP APPROACHED THE ANGLO METHODIST CHURCH WITH A DESIRE FOR THEIR OWN PLACE OF WORSHIP IN 1912, A SMALL CHURCH WAS CONSTRUCTED ON LAND GIVEN BY THE PHARR TOWNSITE COMPANY. ORIGINALLY "THE MEXICAN METHODIST CHURCH," ITS NAME CHANGED IN THE 1940s TO "NORTH PHARR LATIN AMERICAN METHODIST CHURCH" AND THEN TO ITS CURRENT NAME IN 1970. A NEW PLOT OF LAND WAS ACQUIRED UPON WHICH A NEW SANCTUARY WAS BUILT IN 1959, FOLLOWED BY A LARGER FACILITY IN 1995. THE CHURCH PRIDES ITSELF IN ITS YOUTH GROUPS, OUTREACH PROGRAMS, AND SUPPORT TO OTHER MISSION CHURCHES.
