Duane's take
The way the marker tells it, here's the story of Lost Creek Cemetery in Brown County. Now, the original Hog Creek Cemetery was established in the 1870s, about a half mile southwest of where you're standing today. But here's the thing.
After only two burials, the community decided to pick up and move. Reportedly, the soil there was just too rocky. So they relocated.
And the very first person buried at this new location was a man by the name of J. W. Graves, who died in 1874.
The land at that time was owned by H. C. Hancock, and area residents kept right on using the site from there on out.
Then, in 1892, a man named J. C. Hensley, also recorded as Henslee, and his wife, L.
E., deeded that land to Brown County for cemetery and church purposes. By 1932, a chapel had been constructed on the grounds. And then in 1949, the Hog Creek Cemetery Association organized, giving the community something official to tend to what had quietly grown over the decades.
At some point after that, the association made a decision. They changed the name, both the organization and the cemetery itself, from Hog Creek to Lost Creek. Now you could say there's a certain poetry in all of this.
A cemetery that started in the wrong place, moved to the right one, buried its first soul in 1874, got a chapel, got an association, and finally got a new name. Lost Creek. Found its way after all.
