Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll pass it along just the same. Way back in November of 1858, a man named Brother Benton Sweeney sat down with nineteen charter members and organized what would become the Madisonville Church of Christ. Nineteen people.

You could seat them all at a couple of long tables, and yet what they started that November has been going ever since. For many years after that, the congregation didn't have a settled preacher of its own. Traveling ministers came through to serve them, the way preachers did back then, moving from town to town, circuit to circuit.

And the members themselves kept moving too, worshiping in a number of buildings erected at various sites around town. They weren't rooted to one corner of Madisonville just yet. For a good long while, the congregation went by a different name altogether.

They were known as the Christian Church until the early nineteen hundreds. Then came the name they carry today. In 1931, the congregation moved to this very site, and that was a kind of settling, a planting of roots in one place.

Then, in 1988, a new sanctuary was built right here. Throughout all of it, the roster of this congregation has included many prominent Madisonville citizens and community leaders. That's not nothing.

That's a thread running straight from nineteen charter members gathered around Brother Benton Sweeney in November of 1858 all the way to a new sanctuary standing in 1988. Some things, turns out, are built to last.
