The marker tells it this way, and I'm just passin' it along. Now, out here in Starr County, there's a building that's been standin' since 1884. And if walls could talk, these ones have had a long, long time to find the right words.

A German architect by the name of Heinrich Portscheller built this place, and the man knew what he was doing. Born in 1840, Portscheller brought something to the Texas brush country that turned a few heads: a modified classic-revival structure, the kind of design that makes you stop and wonder how it got here and why it feels so deliberate, so considered, out in this stretch of South Texas. He built it for Manuel Guerra, who came into this world in 1856.

And when Portscheller finished his work in 1884, what stood before folks was one of the earliest local examples of sand-struck, hand-cast brick construction in the area; not poured, not hauled in, but hand-cast, brick by brick, the kind of labor that puts something permanent into a place. The building served as both residence and store, two purposes under one roof, the way life out here often demanded. Now here's the part worth sittin' with: Heinrich Portscheller died in 1915, and Manuel Guerra died in 1915.

The same year, two men whose lives had been joined by this very structure. But that building? It kept right on.

It remains in the Guerra family to this day. Some things get built so well, and held so close, that time just decides to work around them.
