Milford Presbyterian Church

Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker says about Milford Presbyterian Church, out in Ellis County, Texas. Now settle in, because this one's got some miles on it; literal miles. June of 1855, sixteen souls gathered and organized a congregation in a part of the world where Presbyterian churches were so scarce you'd have to ride five hundred miles in any direction just to find one of the other three.

Four churches in a five-hundred-mile radius. You do that math and you start to appreciate just how much open sky those early worshippers were working with. The pastors who came to serve this congregation didn't ride in on ceremony; they rode in on horseback, and while they were at it, they went ahead and organized and served three more churches in the outlying areas.

Just men and horses and a calling, covering the country. The congregation put up a house of worship in 1860. Then another in 1896.

Then another in 1921. Three buildings across three different centuries, each one saying the same thing: we're still here. And the wider church knew it, too; Milford hosted the Presbytery four times between 1861 and 1871, and then opened its doors to the Synod in 1920.

The records, as the marker puts it, show the church has been self-sustaining and faithful to support the Presbyterian colleges of Texas, ranking high in benevolences. That's a quiet kind of brag, but it's earned. Now, the bell.

That bell deserves its own campfire. It was cast in New York, and from there it traveled by ship, then by rail, then (and this is where it gets good) by ox-wagon, until it finally arrived and was hung where it belonged. Since 1871, that bell has been calling this corner of Ellis County to worship.

Cast in New York, hauled across half a continent on the backs of oxen, and still ringing. Some things are just meant to arrive.

Organized in June 1855 with 16 members, as one of 4 Presbyterian churches within a radius of 500 miles. Early, horseback-traveling pastors organized and served 3 churches in outlying areas. Congregation built houses of worship in 1860, 1896, 1921. This church was 4 times host to the Presbytery, 1861-71; to Synod, 1920. Records show Milford has been self-sustaining, faithful to support Presbyterian colleges of Texas, and high in benevolences. Church bell, cast in New York, and brought here by ship, rail and ox-wagon, has called area to worship since 1871.
