Duane's take
Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about the Millheim Harmonie Verein, right there in Austin County. Now settle in, because this is a story about music, community, and a barbecue that just refuses to quit. German immigrants came rolling into Texas during the 1840s, and they brought something with them besides grit and ambition.
They brought their singing societies. Traditions from the old country, carried across the ocean and planted right down in the Texas soil. And somewhere in those early years, by 1856 at the latest, something was already stirring in Millheim.
A group of folks who wanted to keep that harmony alive, literally. The Millheim Harmonie Verein. It officially organized in 1873, and the first minutes of the group tell you exactly who stepped up to lead it.
E. G. Maetze took the president's chair.
W. Mersmann came in as vice president. C.
Schneider handled the treasury. And S. Engelking took up the secretary's pen.
Monthly meetings, five dollars a year in membership fees. Simple, steady, serious. Now, a group like that needs a place to gather.
So in 1874 they built a social hall, right on two acres of land purchased from F. Engelking, Sr. and Heinrich Vornkahl. That original Harmonie Hall, it became the heartbeat of the whole community.
Political rallies happened inside those walls. Elections were held there. Families gathered, school programs played out on that floor, and somewhere in that first hall, somebody fired up a barbecue pit for Father's Day, and started a tradition that is still going strong today.
That annual Father's Day barbecue was born right there in the original Harmonie Hall. Now, nothing lasts forever, and by 1938 it was time for something new. Otto and Dora Severin donated property to the Verein, and a new hall went up.
But here's the part I want you to hold onto. They did not just walk away from the old hall. They dismantled it, carefully, and the usable lumber from that original building went right into the construction of the new one.
The old hall didn't disappear. It became part of what came next. And on April 15, 1939, the members of the Millheim Harmonie Verein walked into that new hall and held their first dance.
In 1972, the Verein celebrated its centennial. Then on June 15, 1997, at the annual Father's Day barbecue, they celebrated the 125th anniversary. Entertainment, education, recreation, celebration.
That is what the marker says, and that is what this place delivered, year after year, generation after generation. German immigrants arrived in Texas with a song and a tradition. And in Millheim, they built a hall to hold it, then built another one from the bones of the first.
Some traditions, it turns out, you just can't dismantle.
What the marker says
German immigrants arriving in Texas during the 1840s soon established singing societies in their new communities to carry on the traditions of their homeland. Although in existence by 1856, the Millheim Harmonie Verein officially organized in 1873. The first minutes of the group show that the first elected officers were E. G. Maetze, president; W. Mersmann, vice president; C. Schneider, treasurer; and S. Engelking, secretary. Early meetings were held monthly, and membership fees were $5.00 per year. A social hall was built in 1874 on two acres purchased from F. Engelking, Sr. and Heinrich Vornkahl. The original Harmonie Hall served the members of the Verein and the residents of the Millheim community for many years. It was the location of political rallies, elections, family gatherings and school programs. The annual Father's Day barbecue, which is still held today, was begun in the first Harmonie Hall. A new hall was constructed in 1938 on property donated to the Verein by Otto and Dora Severin. The old hall was dismantled and usable lumber was used in the construction of the new hall. Members attended the first dance in the new hall on April 15, 1939. The centennial of the Millheim Harmonie Verein was celebrated in 1972, and the 125th anniversary of the Verein was celebrated at the annual Father's Day barbecue on June 15, 1997. As a gathering place for entertainment, education, recreation and celebration, the Millheim Harmonie Verein has played an important role in the life of the surrounding community and its citizens.
